So here it is. Full of green, hopefully full of energy compared to Round 1. I’m happy with the state it is in now, but want to try and push it a little further. Waiting on the inspiration to hit.

White Space.
About that. I had a lot of it and had no idea what to fill it with, so I started with triangles in every shade of green I could come up with, because arrows, meant UP, or at least that was the theme I was working with in the previous video. When that didn’t work, I started playing with the diamond shape in general, within after effects, my original intent was to have 2 different shades of green diamonds, arranged in a way on the screen and at the correct time, would explode off of the screen. Well through a lot of trial and error, I found the “scatterize” effect in AE and felt it was the perfect effect, particles represent energy, along with the color green (which also means GO) and felt it was the perfect thing to go with the song I had chosen for this piece.
How to make your boring video un-boring.
I wish I could say that I had a devised plan on how to do such things as the above title states. If I did, I would be a millionaire… right? But anyways here’s what I did to try and get back on the right track with this project.
As simple of a style as Round 1 was, it was still complicated. So I broke it down, I minimized my color choices down to just GREEN. I kept the Univers typeface, but decided on keeping all text in capitol letters, and in the extra bold font.
Once I had those essential requirements narrowed down, then came the task of figuring out what to do with all of that white space…
So here was round one of my UP video, or PSA as I’ve come to explain it. I pretty much hated it going into critique, but I was also at a loss with the project. During critique, some had some helpful criticism, others did not, but that’s crit. Leaving class that day, I still had no idea where to go with the project, but that’s for more blog posts.
So, as a reminder to you (and myself actually) this project will ultimately end up being a motion graphics piece and therefore will need some kind of sound. If you’re like me, music really helps in inspiration to do all sorts of things and that includes getting UP. So originally I had planned on creating my own music (…I’m a nut) and well, I think ultimately that would be something I would love to do, but I’m no musician and garage band (and other applications like it) are completely foreign. So in the mean time, I think I would like to use the song above, hopefully it goes over well.
I like it because it’s just subtle enough to get someone thinking and then BOOM the tempo picks up, the sound gets a little louder, and well I’m off my feet. Are you?
Okie dokie, so LOGOs. Well after talking to Professor Jackson about how to emphasize my logo design, with the “arrow” theme, he told me I should start experimenting with color and negative space. Now that I think about it, I guess I should have realized that in the first place, but bear with me people: This is my first attempt at logo design!
So the first picture shows my pretty lame attempt at incorporating color into my design, where as my second attempt at giving color kind of produced a logo epiphany for me and BOOM we have success. I’ll be taking these in to my one-on-one meeting and we’ll see where the logo might progress from there!
So here’s the fun stuff, right? Utilizing the Kuler website, I simply searched “active” to see what people had come up with and found some fun combinations as seen above. I really liked the first option and Professor Jackson agreed, even when I showed concern that it might be too feminine, he said it should be fine.
Then came the TYPE! Having just learned about font-squirrel, I quickly got lost in it’s world and found myself downloading all types of typefaces. I knew I was looking for a sans serif type face that I would be manipulating in Illustrator and the two pictured above, Enigmatic & League Gothic, ended up being my favorites from the bunch.
The next process was to take the type into Illustrator and see what I could come up with. I ended up choosing League Gothic and started taking my sketch ideas and seeing what I could come up with. I’m not a great drawer, at all, but I knew that I wanted to work with the idea of an arrow and something that defined an upward motion. From those ideas, you see my first round of logo attempts above!
Next Up: MORE LOGOS.
Is this how you feel? Well then maybe you need a little something to spark yourself into action.
That is the idea behind my Production Pipeline project.
UP » The Get-Active Initiative. I’m targeting Men and Women, 18-35 who want to start being active or were once active in their younger years and would like to regain that back into their lives.
The idea behind this project is that it only takes that first step to bring activity back into your life. Wake Up. Get Up. Up.
My project will culminate into a motion graphics piece that would be visualized online and with that a companion poster, something that a viewer could put on the fridge, in the bedroom, or bathroom, to remind them to continue to Get Up, instead of having to watch the video all the time. Because we all know, no one will do that.
Next Up: Logos, Colors, & Type
Spring Quarter:Production Pipeline
So this blog has been kind of at a stalemate these past few months, but it is about to live again! This time around it will be used as a process blog for my Production Pipeline class. The idea behind this class is to come up with our own, quarter-long project that should essentially be done by week 8. So here goes nothing!
